Businesses are in a win-win situation if they create mentally healthy workplaces.
It is a fantastic resource that clearly explains how individuals and organisations can benefit from mental health programmes that are driven by business leaders. They also provide easy to use, tailored action plans, tools and fact sheets.
When I recently visited their website, I was encouraged by the straight forward information provided regarding the findings of PwC, including:
Australian employers lose $12.3 billion every year through absenteeism, reduced productivity and staff turnover, due to untreated depression
They went on to explain that the effects of untreated depression in the workplace include:
- 3 to 4 days off work per month for each person experiencing depression
- over 6 million working days lost each year in Australia
- 12 million days of reduced productivity each year
- poor morale and staff engagement
- high staff turnover
- potential penalties for breaches of work health and safety legislation
- business reputations are at risk among potential clients, customers and employees
By utilising the freely available resources on Heads Up and implementing mental health workplace programs, PwC estimates an average ROI of $2.30 for every $1 invested.
As business owners we have an important role to play. Mental health is just as important as physical health, yet too often it is ignored with far-reaching consequences. We need to remember that:
If we invest in people, they will invest in us
Our businesses are more than the products and services we provide. People make the company, without them we are nothing, so let’s take action now to support them in the ways they need.
I encourage you to take the first step that benefits everyone, visit Heads Up.
On behalf of your employees, I thank you.
